Letter from Emily

The other day I opened my email and found the following from my niece Emily (now serving an LDS Mission in Chile):

Hey uncle!

Hey, I´ve got a favor to ask…. So, we’ve got this investigator, (well, sort of. He’s actually not an investigator because he’s a less active member) and he’s really struggling because he had a great mormon life. He served a mission, he got married in the temple. But now he’s divorced, and has been for quite a few years, and he feels like he did everything right and he had his eternal family, and then it didn’t work so obviously the church doesn’t work. And I thought of you. Because you’ve been through that, and your still strong, and that’s so cool. He has a girlfriend that he lives with now and they have a son, and I really want to help him see that he can have an eternal family still and it’ll all be okay, and I was wondering if you could send me your testimony of the gospel and of families and God and whatever else. I mean, you don’t have to, but I think it might help him to see someone else who understands sort of what he’s gone through and still has that testimony.

Thank you!

Love,

Hermana Andersen

Our Family Heritage

Recently I started reading a thick book that has set on my bookshelf for years.  Each time I walk into my office I see it and yet I have never read it.  Then a couple of Sundays ago, for some reason, I picked it up and started reading.

The name of this book is “James Henry Denning Sr. – Family History“.  It is the story of my Great Grandpa and his family.  There are two volumes about 3 inches thick.  Just the look of them is enough to scare anyone.

Mothers

Today, we celebrate the statehood of Mother.  What I find interesting about this day, is that the founder, Anna Jarvis, had wanted to create a way to remember and show gratitude to her Mother.  After years of proposing a day be set aside each year for us to commemorate our mothers, finally in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a bill setting aside the second Sunday of May as a celebration to all Mothers in the U.S.  Then in the 1920’s, with all the commercialism that had started for Mother’s Day, Anna Jarvis wanted to boycott the use of Mother’s Day and have it removed.  The original idea of celebrating, visiting, and remembering our mothers had turned into another day for businesses to make a lot of money. In Midway with Rachel and her family

Michelle and I had the great opportunity to go up and spend the day with Rachel and her family in Park City.  After we got there, we decided to go to Midway, so that Brooklyn could swim in the volcano.  There is a crater at the Homestead resort that has a natural spring inside of it and has been set up as a type of swimming pool.  The water is 80 degrees and quite nice to swim or just float in.  It is also around 60 feet deep.

Here are a number of pictures I took while there.

Each time I have the opportunity to spend time with one or all of my children and their families, I realize how blessed I am as a parent.

Gifts from Children

Michelle and Chad gave Tonya and me a little plaque to hang on our wall.

The simplest gifts, make for the biggest surprises.

The Best Parents

With this gift, there was also a secret recording happening in the back ground, which was sent to me for review.  Here it is:

Best Friends

As we traverse this life we enjoy the pleasures of many “Best Friend” associations.  Yesterday one of those “Best Friend” relationships ended for me.  The Best Friend I am referring to is a small Maltese dog named “MIssy”.  I have had this dog for over 13 years.  She made real the phrase “To be dogged”.  She followed me everywhere.  When I arrived home, she was the first one at the door.  She made life interesting and even in those times when I scolded her, all I had to do was pet her and all was forgiven.  She has been a true friend.
