I was watching the news last night and one of the stories discussed was about compassion. How seventy-seven cities around the world have come together to show more compassion towards those living in the city, hoping to reduce crime and hardships in those places. What they have found is with compassion comes change and improvement.
I looked up the word compassion. It comes from the latin word compati, to suffer with. Here are the synonyms:
pity, sympathy, empathy, fellow feeling, care, concern, solicitude, sensitivity, warmth, love, tenderness, mercy, leniency, tolerance, kindness, humanity, charity |

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we could take this group of words and apply them into our lives. Rather than hate and vengeance, it would be replaced with love and warmth.
I recently listened to a book called “Half the Sky” which discussed the dire circumstances of women throughout the world, especially in third world countries. It discussed the conditions in which women live and the evils perpetrated on them. The book pointed out that giving the opportunity these women could and have brought about change. For example, if given $100, a man, in one of these third world countries, would spend it on drink, sex or some other self-fulfilling need. If you give that same $100 to a women/mother/wife, there is a strong possibility that the money would be used to educate her children or start a small business to improve her situation. It is amazing what these women could do with $100. I am not saying that it always works this way, but women generally show more compassion and love. The book talked about one African country having suffered through poverty, hunger and then a civil war. After the rebels won the war and took control of the country, one of the new requirements for government was that women had to hold at least 40% of the seats in the legislature. What they found with the passing of time is the country was slowly moving away from poverty and into posterity. The thought behind this story is that women hold the keys to improving this world because of the compassion and love they show. Though this book tells the stories of women, I also believe there are a lot of men that have and show compassion. But I see that with both men and women, as they gain power, they sometimes lose the capacity to love and care for others, that personal gain starts to creep into their thought process.
If we could suffer with those around us, then our understanding of the world would grow. If we could love our neighbor and forgive past wrongs, there would be less hatred. If we could realize that we are all working through this life together, facing hardships and struggles, war would give away to peace and hatred would give away to understanding.
One last comment, I believe that compassion starts with me. If I show compassion, then I believe it will spread. With each day, I need to consider how to apply this concept into my life and then I will find peace of mind and “The Pure Love of Christ”.
